Total Ruins

Total Ruins

I have been coming across every now and then what I think may be ruins of once- existing structures, usually on hillsides.  The stones seem worked out, yet with no modern quarry marks on them.  I get the feeling these are ruins in a totally destroyed state.  Check out these examples of a couple sites from Hopkinton/ Milford MA:

This does not look like glacial dumpage, and I also see no quarry markings.  Was this a structure picked apart for the stone, or maybe a collapse with time?:

Site #2, same thing:

Example #3, from a site I visited on a hillside in CT.  This enclosure looks like the ruins of something that was once much more elaborate:

Example #4 here is not my picture.  This was on Dr. Jack Dempsey's website "Ancient Lights."  This site is near Boston, in Weymouth MA. Jack Dempsey is pretty much analyzing these ruins in Weymouth the same way I was analyzing the above pictures- ruins of something at one time more elaborate:

  3. I am suspicious of the link. Something funny about the photos andhow his finds are not located in any way (not even the state where they were found) and also that nothing of the kind has ever been found in a cairn I know of - except the ones, which were later discredited, found by Fred Meli.
For the record, I also fear someone will create a false associated between treasure and rock piles - leading to someone destroying a rock pile or two before they realize the futility.

  4. pwax- Good sensible point about someone falsely associating ceremonial rock piles with artifact hunting. Like those kids down in Tennessee Tim MacSweeney (or you, I forget who posted it, but it's up on your blog) recently posted about. With this in mind I have edited the post.
As for Jack Dempsey's credibility- he has a good record of working with Wampanoag people and elders in the area- he even compiled footage and released the documentary "Nani: A Native New England Story" (the name Nani was in honor of the late Nanapashemet, a Wampanoag scholar and activist.) If you do go to the website, Ancient Lights, if you put the mouse over the pictures there actually is a description on most pics that says what state the artifact was found in.
