Holliston MA. Site Pt. 1
This is close to the site from my previous recent post from Holliston. At this site, the first stone feature I came across was this cairn. View A-

Unusually- shaped tree. Stone wall retaining what is today the swamp in the background:

Face in the tree-
What looks like a fallen Standing Stone at the foot of a boulder (base to the left, tip to the right). I was able to slightly shake this with one hand to make sure the dimesnsions were in fact that of a Standing Stone. One to two people could move this stone easily. To me, this doesn't look knocked over. It looks dismantled from some other spot and moved here, as if to hide it from plain sight:

Tree fall in the swamp. Some nice vegetation:
Another pick of the retaining wall around the swamp-
I wonder how old that tree is in #5. Google "Trail Trees" and you'll see why I ask.
ReplyDeleteDoes that row of stones "contain" the swamp - or 'surround' it, form a border around the wet/riparian zone? Any sort of "gate" in that "wall?"
(Nice Rhomboidal Stone in #6, too!)

Tim-
ReplyDeleteI would say that tree is at least 70- 100 years old. The fact that it is a "Trail Tree" is why I took note of it, although I was unaware that the term "trail tree" was being widely used to describe this practise (so thank you for that.)
As for the retaining wall, it retains the swamp on four sides. there was no gate or break in the wall that I saw on the four sides that contained the swamp. One side of the stone wall that contains the swamp went up further away from the swamp- if I remember correctly this part of the wall may have a break in it, and is near to the area of the other stone works (cairn 1, etc.)
In my coverage of Part 2 of this site there was also a broken pale bucket on the ground next to the retaining wall by the swamp. This can actually be seen in the distance of pic 11 in part 2, but I lost the new camera I got for myself a year ago so I am still shooting crappy- quality pics (although I focus it as best I can and some pics do come out reasonably well.)
